before entering the water
Use a familiar carbohydrate-rich meal with enough digestion time. Cold water can blunt thirst and appetite, while nerves can slow comfortable eating, so the final rehearsal should mimic the early start and transport.
Apply the same safety principle as any endurance event: arrive normally hydrated, not overloaded with water.
feeds must be operational
For long swims, pre-measure carbohydrate and label bottles or containers in order. Practise a feeding method that minimises time upright and avoids inhaling fluid. Check whether outside assistance, poles or tethered bottles are permitted.
Concentrated fuel may be practical when feed time is brief, but it must be tested with the available fluid. Count carbohydrate per hour across every feed.
